Tater Tot Hot Dish Recipe

Where I’m from in Northern Minnesota – the “Hot Dish” is a tried and true dinner or potluck staple. Called a “Casserole” in other parts of the country – where I’m from the covered glass dish you put the hot dish IN is called the “casserole.”

There are probably 5 million recipes like this one out there – some are more elaborate. I love this one because it’s easy, takes about 10 minutes to put together, and doesnt require many ingredients – It’s completely economical as well. You could get away with 1/2 lb ground beef (turkey, chicken, elk, venison – or whatever) very easily. Add veggies if you like – we usually serve veggie on the side with this one.

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion diced
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 package tater tots or tater rounds
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups cheddar cheese grated
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven to 350
  2. Brown ground beef and onion in a skillet until pink completely disappears. Season with salt and pepper as it cooks. Drain if needed (I use 90/10 beef so draining isn't necessary)
  3. In an 8x8 or 9x9 pan, mix the browned beef and the cream soup together well, spread out along bottom of pan
  4. place a single layer of tater tots on top of the beef and soup mixture
  5. Top with Cheese
  6. Bake for approx. 40 minutes at 350
